Epoxy-coated concrete stands up to years of heavy use — which is where the money is saved, over the life of the floor rather than on day one.
Curing turns epoxy into a solid polymer: hard, and chemically resistant to the processes that break other finishes down. Its compressive strength is higher than that of concrete and its tensile strength considerably higher again — and because the material is fluid when it goes down, it penetrates the finest hairline cracks and voids in the surface it is poured over.
Installation is quick and straightforward, so the area is back in use sooner and little production time is lost.
Why epoxy flooring
Coating concrete closes its pores, and a floor without pores is a floor that cleans easily. The coating shields the slab from physical and chemical attack and stops water passing through concrete that would otherwise be permeable — in effect a waterproof layer that also keeps damp out of the storeys below. The surface is antibacterial: micro-organisms cannot live or multiply on it, which is why the food industry uses it so widely. It does not hold dirt and washes down quickly.

With proper surface preparation and the right system, an epoxy floor lasts 8–15 years in industrial use. Three things decide its life: the soundness of the existing concrete, the thickness of the system chosen and the intensity of forklift and load traffic it carries.
Price depends on the area in square metres, the system chosen (coating, self-levelling, multilayer, antistatic, mortar), the film thickness and the condition of the existing slab. Grinding, repair and priming are added where the substrate needs them. HBK carries out free site surveys across the eight provinces we serve.
Foot traffic is allowed roughly 24 hours after application. Full mechanical and chemical resistance needs seven days of cure, and heavy loads or chemical contact should be kept off the floor until then.
Choose epoxy for enclosed areas where heavy mechanical load and chemical resistance come first. Choose polyurethane for outdoor areas, UV exposure, thermal shock or where the slab is likely to move and crack. Food plants washed down with hot water need Ucrete polyurethane concrete.
