Types of Sports Flooring

Sports floors surface types

Sports surfaces are laid indoors and outdoors alike, and matching the surface to the activity is what keeps play safe and the facility working as it should.

Acrylic sports surfaces: available in any colour, slip-resistant and largely unaffected by weather, acrylic gives you hard or cushioned surfaces for basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. It is laid 2–3 mm thick over asphalt or concrete. It looks good, is hygienic and slip-resistant, and stands up to climate, temperature change, heavy foot traffic and chemicals.

Rubber sports surfaces: One of the best options for a surface in constant use: suitable for a wide range of sports, and long-lived.

Polyurethane sports surfaces: Polyurethane is laid over concrete: easy to clean, non-yellowing, abrasion-resistant and protective. Because it is cast in place there are no joints, and therefore no change in level at the edges. In indoor ball sports it gives the ball a natural, predictable response. Its matt finish removes light reflection completely. Pressure from heavy objects does not mark it, and the polyurethane colour coat makes it highly resistant to scratching and wear. Maintained properly, it holds those properties for many years.

Tartan (rubber granule) surfaces: Tartan surfaces are chosen for their flexibility, shock absorption and UV resistance, because they hold their shape through temperature change, and because they are hygienic, environmentally sound, easy to clean, slip-resistant and comfortable underfoot. Two systems are available: SBR, and SBR with an EPDM wearing layer.

Tartan surface (SBR): Coloured, UV-stable SBR granules bound with polyurethane. The mix is cast in place and pigmented with iron oxide or chromium oxide. It can be laid to whatever thickness is required and is both flexible and water-permeable — which matters for the athletes using it.

Tartan surface (SBR + EPDM): The first layer is SBR rubber granules in a polyurethane binder. A second layer of EPDM granules, in the colour required and again bound with polyurethane, is cast over it to complete the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we are asked most about flooring, answered by our technical team. If something here does not cover your case, call us on 0507 597 9537.

How many coats does an acrylic court system have?

A standard acrylic court build-up has five to seven layers: primer, resurfacer, two or three coloured acrylic coats and the line marking. The number of coats depends on how heavily the court will be used and on the playing speed required.

Which season is best for installing an acrylic court?

Surface temperature must stay above +10 °C and the weather must be dry throughout application and cure. In Gaziantep and the surrounding provinces the window from spring to autumn is the reliable season.

How soon can the court be played on?

Usually 48–72 hours after the final coat and line marking. Air temperature and humidity shift that window either way.

Can it be applied over existing asphalt or concrete?

Yes. Sound, fully cured asphalt or concrete takes an acrylic system directly. Cracks are repaired and ponding areas levelled first, then the acrylic build-up is applied over the corrected surface.
